Puffin Maddness
Puffin merch everywhere, but are there Puffins in Homer Alaska? Yes. But. They like this island off the spit in Kachemak Bay and I was told they may or may not come out to play. By spit I mean a tail of land. If any of these names are sounding familiar it’s because this harbor is home to a few of the Deadliest Catch vessels. And there’s scientists crawling around everywhere doing studies.
Kurt and I took the Orca, run by Mako’s Water Taxi, out to Gull Island. Our captain was an affable young man who seemed like he knew everyone. (I think I’m at an age where everyone under 40 looks extra young and everyone over 40 looks old and in my head I’m still 25. But my body says absolutely not you’re 41 going on 80). The point is we had a great captain who (is this the time to use whom?) you could tell enjoyed being on the water and talking to people.
It was my lucky day. There were many elusive Puffins swimming about their rock island kingdom. Many. A veritable smorgasbord of Puffins.
They obliged my Puffin viewing dreams.
Bonus:
Baby otter antics
Bald Eagle harassing the gulls
A trail of Murres across the water like a river.
A humpback whale sighting
Signing off for now▪️
When I lived up there and had a boat we frequently went out of Homer to one of the many bays and camped for the weekend. We'd dig for clams, go halibut fishing, and generally just hang out and enjoy the beauty.
Great photos, it really captured a mood of the day. I never really thought about where puffins lived, definitely never imagined them swimming!
